Biography of Maria Izquierdo

The early years of the life of this talented artist, were spent in the peaceful existence of San Juan de los Lagos, where he was born in 1902. From his hometown absorbed the colors and customs that characterize throughout his life and usher in most of his work. Years after his family saw the need to move to Saltillo, Coahuila, where he lived for many years and where he began studying at the Ateneo Fuente (Ramirez Gea). Radico Married in 1917 in the capital of the Republic since 1923. Admission in 1927 to the Academy of San Carlos, where he studied one year. Teachers had by Germán Gedovius and Manuel Toussaint, but the most profound influence received Rufino Tamayo. Made his first exhibition in 1929, supported by Diego Rivera, who made written comments to be submitted. The following year led to the Art Center in New York a sample comprising portraits, landscapes and studies, being the first Mexican woman who exhibited in the United States. Jalisco talented artist who has put time along with Frida Kahlo at the top of the Mexican women's painting. He lived in different parts of the Republic, where he participated in various pictorial movements and was rejected by others. His biographers assume that attended the Academy of Ruben Herrera, due to the strong background that showed.

In 1936 Mexico became the French surrealist poet and theorist Antonin Artaud, who felt captivated by the Left to paint what I call "sincere, spontaneous, primitive and disturbing." Through his influence succeeded Mary exhibit in Paris.

During the rest of his life he continued to ally with Tamayo against discriminatory monopoly of the muralists.

According to the compilers of the book "Twenty Centuries of Jalisco in the paint," the work of Maria Izquierdo, which initially was listed as primitive by some critics, was characterized mostly by Mexicanist popular themes in their conceptual elements but with a modern discourse in its formal and aesthetic treatment. His proposal is twofold plastic that shaped their experiences and emotions. His paintings, inspired by folklore and national rates, sometimes resulting in surrealism; have a popular character and made a primitive style based on simplicity, vigorous lines and bright colorful. Its abundant production is composed of oils, watercolors, drawings, etchings and woodcuts. He exhibited in major museums and galleries in Mexico, New York, Buffalo, Hollywood, San Francisco, Santiago, Chile, Guatemala, Panama, Brazil, Lima, La Paz, Rio de Janeiro, Bombay, Paris and Tokyo. His paintings are in museums and private collections of great importance both in Mexico and abroad. In 1964, Year of Plastic Arts of Jalisco, was the only woman whose name remained inscribed alongside the other 17 artists on the wall of the monument to José Clemente Orozco in Guadalajara. Tamayo taught using watercolor and gouache. Notable are his portraits and scenes of circus province. Since 1935 I teach at the School of Plastic Arts of the SEP and I'm part of the League of Revolutionary Writers and Artists. He was a founder member of the House of Artists of America.

In 1948 he suffered an attack of hemiplegia that paralyzed half of his body. Only the determination and will repaint made, but unfortunately without its former level. He died in Mexico City in 1955.
